Military Operations Research Master's Degree and Certificate Program
The Department offers a master's degree in operations research
with a concentration in military operations research.
The program is designed to provide the knowledge, tools and techniques necessary to support military decision making with quantitative analysis. Our students include active-duty military personnel, government employees, and commercial contractors both domestic and from abroad. The program focuses in particular on analysis to support defense decisions at the national level, a focus most pertinent in the Washington DC area.
The certificate program is appropriate for students who cannot complete all the requirements
for a master's degree in operations research, but who want
concentrated study in military modeling. It is also appropriate for those who already possess a quantitative master's degree and want concentrated studies in in military modeling. The programs are the only ones of their kind in a civilian university in the United States Admission Requirements
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in a related field and have taken the following George Mason courses or their equivalents: MATH 113, 114, 203 or 322, and 213. Applicants must have also taken STAT 344 and 354, and have knowledge of at least one scientific computer programming language. MS/OR with Concentration in Military Operations Research Aside from the five core courses students concentrating must complete OR 651, OR 652 and SYST 683. The two remaining elective courses must include one stochastic methods course and one deterministic methods course. Modifications to the requirements may be made with approval of the advisor.
